In the FTI's three level Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship Program, students learn to select, prepare and apply paint to a variety of different surfaces, including steel, concrete, and wood. They also learn about sandblasting and industrial coating.
Throughout the program, Painting and Decorating apprentices accelerate what they learn in the classroom by applying new techniques and procedures to hands on projects. The program usually takes about three years to complete, and each level is 6 weeks long.
Successful completion of the program earns apprentices a Red Seal certification and a Certificate of Apprenticeship.
Program Outline:
Level 1
In Level 1, apprentices gain an understanding of the painting industry as a whole. They are introduced to common coatings, surface preparation, and the tools used in the trade, including airless spray. An extensive safety program includes respirator training, fall protection, ladder and scaffold training, elevated platform training, and WHMIS.
Level 2
As a Level 2 apprentice, students begin learning specialized painting techniques. Apprentices learn about wood finishing, wall covering, residential wallpapers, colour theory, and air spray technologies. Using cutting-edge technology, such as the FTI's virtual spray machine, apprentices begin to round out their knowledge of the painting trade by taking part in hands-on training exercises.
Level 3
As an advanced painter, Level 3 apprentices further develop their understanding of wall covering, and are introduced to commercial vinyl and reading blueprints. They learn creative faux finishing techniques such as wood graining, marbling, glazing procedures. Students also prepare to write the interprovincial Red Seal examination.
