The FTI's Drywall Finishing Apprenticeship Program is two levels and trains students to prepare, tape, fill and sand drywall seams, corners, and angles in a variety of different environments and contexts. Through a combination of classroom and hands-on shop learning, Drywall Finishing Apprentices are immersed in the trade in order to develop the skills they need to become valuable members of commercial, industrial, and residential jobsites.
The program usually takes about three years to complete, and each level requires 180 hours at the FTI.
Successful completion of the program earns apprentices a BC Certificate of Qualification.
Program Outline:
Level 1
In order to develop safe work practices in drywall finishers, the apprentices learn about general safety procedures and fall protection. They are introduction to hand tools, basic taping and filling procedures, and the application of corner beads. Students apply these new skills on individual mockups located in the FTI shop.
Level 2
After a review of Level One, apprentices move toward developing more advanced tool skills and learn about automatic or machine taping. They use advanced machines such as the APLA-TEC taping system. They also hone skills in machine and hand texturing, drywall finishing repairs, and how to problem solve on the job.
Program Fees
Program fees include Apprentice books and manuals.
