The FTI Quick Facts
Located in Surrey, B.C., the Finishing Trades Institute was formerly known as the DC38 Training Centre, and began training painting apprentices in 1992. Beginning in 2006 more than $2.5 million was invested in enlarging, refurbishing and re-equipping this facility. It is designated as a training facility by the Industry Training Authority of BC and now accommodates apprenticeship and journeyperson training for Painters, Wall & Ceiling Installers (lathers), Drywall Finishers, Glaziers, and Allied Workers.
Here are some highlights about the school:
Painting Apprenticeship and Upgrading Program
• Painting and Decorating apprenticeship training offered since 1992
• The only designated trainer for the painting trade
• Specialized equipment includes virtual painter technology, abrasive blasting, spray paint lab
• Training for both industrial and commercial/institutional needs
Glazing Apprenticeship and Upgrading Program
• Began offering Glazier training in 2007, now the primary provincial trainer in B.C.
• Purpose-built facilities including lifts, swing stages, specialized equipment used on the job
Interior Systems Mechanic (Lather) Apprenticeship and Upgrading Program
• Began offering Wall and Ceiling Installer (lather) training in 2008
• Specialized facilities allow practical teaching of all aspects of trade and new technologies
• Program includes instruction in new wall and ceiling materials
Drywall Finishing (Taper) Apprenticeship and Upgrading Program
• Began offering Drywall Finishing training in 2008
• Custom modules simulate real job site situations
Overall statistics:
• 26,000 square feet including labs, work areas and classrooms
• Specialized facilities for each trade
• Integrated learning -- multi-trade construction modules
• Journeyperson upgrading available for all trades
• Safety training, supervisory skills, specialized programs offered as needed

2004: 7 classes with 100 students
2009: 27 classes with 420 students
